  • Treo 680 gets stereo Bluetooth (A2DP)

Posted on March 4th, 2007 Shawn No comments

Great news for Treo 680 users. You already know how much I love Softick’s Audio Gateway on the Treo 650. It’s been a while, but the Softick team has started to release beta’s for the 680 users.

    [2007-03-02]
Softick Audio Gateway 1.10 beta with Palm Treo 680 smartphone support is available.

Softick Audio Gateway 1.10 beta with Palm Treo 680 smartphone support is available. Please note that this software is in the beta stage and can (and probably will) contain bugs and open issues.

  • Treo 650 is da bomb. ‘F’ WinMo and iPhone

Posted on February 24th, 2007 Shawn No comments

Very quick update on the go. I now can state that in 2007, the Treo 650 is as good as new technology…of course, it’s all due too a retarded amount of OS hacks, 3rd party software, and accessories.

I’ve successfully updated my ROM to allow SDHC cards. Today I am running with an 8GB SDHC card. You can’t get that on any WinMo device, yet. Oh, and it’s actually more usable memory than the upcoming $600 iPhone. So sweet! Thanks EasyE, Shadowmite, and the Grack guys for schooling me on custom ROMs.

Thanks to the big ass 3200mah battery from Seidio, I can go all day streaming Internet radio without running out of juice.

By now, you already know about my use of Pocket Tunes, Softick Audio Gateway, and ChatterEmail (R.I.P. – Marc best of luck at Palm.)

I’ll update this post later on with some links.

  • 700p still wins, but will WM6 topple it?

Posted on February 22nd, 2007 Shawn No comments

UPDATE: I added the hypothetical Treo 750 with Windows Mobile 6. It ties the 700p…and once I get info on a couple more specs, may take the top spot.

The news of WM6 got me thinking…..is it time to hang up the old Palm OS and move to something that continues to update and (sort of) innovate? I love my Treo 650 and have all plans of getting a 700p once the ROM update comes out from Palm.

Though with WM6 just around the corner, and possibly answering some of the BIG reasons I wouldn’t switch…..it’s time to review my “Smartphone/PDA Must Have List”. To be fair, I have left WM6 off, since it’s too early to tell weather it will be on the 700wx, 750, or something else. But, just remember…it will be 320×320 and have all the pros of Bluetooth 2.0 (including stereo Bluetooth). If they only add SDHC support…WM6 might just bury my Palm OS (along with my best friends Pocket Tunes, Softick Audio Gateway, and ChatterEmail). The next couple months will tell.

Now, back to the updated table. BTW, I added the 700wx (now that Verizon is offering it).

    1st place = Treo 700p and the hypothetical Treo 750 with WM6 — 23.5 points (out of a possible 25)
2nd place = Treo 680 and Treo 750 — 22.5 points (tie, what a shock…the old technology 680 ties the new ‘it’ phone. It’s only because I allowed EDGE to count as pseudo high-speed)
3rd place = Treo 700wx — 21 points (I think I have missed something on the specs, as I’d think it would weigh in the same as the 750)
    4th place = iPhone — 13 points (Beautiful user interface…that’s about it)

  • The MUST HAVE Smartphone….aka my Treo 650 replacement

Posted on January 24th, 2007 Shawn No comments

My comparison list is in. This is the list of potential PDA/Smartphones that I am looking at to replace my Treo 650. Along with each device, is the updated (and better organized) list of criteria. So far, based on my research….it looks like the Treo 700p is the winner by a hair. I expected the Treo 750 to take the lead, but it just missed the mark. I think the 2GB limitation for Windows Mobile kept it from taking the lead. To give Apple some street-cred, there are still too many unknowns on that iPhone. I wasn’t able to honestly score the iPhone. Currently, it’s disqualified….but maybe it will make a return once people get their hands on it.

    1st place = Treo 700p 23.5 points (out of a possible 25)
2nd place = Treo 680 and Treo 750 (tie, what a shock…the old technology 680 ties the new ‘it’ phone. It’s only because I allowed EDGE to count as pseudo high-speed)
3rd place = iPhone (disqualified due to too many unknowns)

  • Treo 680 vs. iPhone @ Treonauts

Posted on January 11th, 2007 Shawn No comments

iPhoneTreo 680Palm Treo 680 vs. Apple iPhone/ is a very interesting editorial over at Treonauts and is one heck of a good editorial and a good comparison. “It’s funny that the iPhone should so clearly have helped me to better recognize the terrific accomplishments that Palm has delivered with our Treo. It may not be immediately perceived to be quite as “cool” as an iPhone but the fact is that the Treo clearly deserves the praise and success that it has already achieved. I have no doubt that the iPhone will be an extremely successful device in its own right – one which will continue to help grow the smartphone space with an even younger generation – but for now at least I certainly don’t believe that it will be a Treo-killer.” Full Story

  • Treo 700p beats T-Mobile Dash, according to Boston Business

Posted on January 11th, 2007 Shawn No comments

Treo 700pBoston Business News gives mention this morning to this report from The Strategy Analytics that the Palm Treo 700P Narrowly Beats T-Mobile Dash Strong Usability Score Gives Treo the Edge. “he Strategy Analytics recently released, “Converged Devices USA: Palm Treo 700P Best New Device, Beating Blackberry Pearl and T-Mobile Dash,” its latest converged device benchmark, reports on results from hands-on consumer testing by the Strategy Analytics Advanced Wireless Laboratory (AWL) Panel in Boston, MA. The Treo 700P, which runs on a Palm OS, achieved top ratings in four out of the five categories tested, including a 15-point lead over the Windows Mobile based T-Mobile Dash for application usability. The Treo 700P also leads for Menu/UI, Input and Display, while the Dash scored highest for Style/Design. As found in previous AWL testing, participants who were unfamiliar with a Blackberry struggled with the steep out-of-the-box learning curve of Pearl. “The majority of participants found the unique navigation style ball of the Pearl difficult to use,” according to Paul Brown, Wireless Analyst at Strategy Analytics. “The Pearl’s semi-QWERTY keypad was also cumbersome for a lot of users, which led to a lot of mistakes being made when they typed an email.” Kevin Nolan, Director of the Advanced Wireless Laboratory added, “Participants were impressed by the look and feel of the T-Mobile Dash. They were particularly enthused by the slim profile.” Full Story

I think it’s time that I start a forum here. Since I spend half my day reading other forums and blogs about Treos, PalmOS, Symbian, Windows Mobile, Bluetooth, and now iPhone….I might as well get people joining me here.

Let’s get started. Let’s talk about what I waste most of my time:

      Treo 650
      Treo 700p
      Softick Audio Gateway
      EVDO
      Verizon Wireless
      of course…….iPhone
      Bluetooth
