  • November Obsessions Update

Posted on November 19th, 2008 Shawn No comments

Continuing on our blast of culminating obsessions this month, here’s the update.

    • November 4 – Research In Motion & AT&T released the BlackBerry Bold.  Although it was released several months late, it’s by far the nicest BlackBerry to date…soon to be overshadowed by the Storm.
    • November 6 – Rock Band 2 Bonus DLC was released with little fanfare since it comtained mostly unknown artists and unknown songs.  But, heck, 20 free songs is 20 free songs.
    • November 18 – The weekly blast of Rock Band DLC came out.
    • November 19 – Microsoft will officially released the New Xbox Experience upon the masses (i.e. 14 million Xbox Live subscribers).  This will gives a beautiful update the Xbox 360 dashboard, bring on cool avatars, lot’s of social activities, and the biggie….Netflix streaming capabilities.
    • November 21 – Research In Motion & Verizon Wireless will release the most discussed BlackBerry of the year, the BlackBerry Storm.  This is the first BlackBerry with full touchscreen and amazing media capabilities.  It’s going to give AT&T and the iPhone some serious competition.
    • November 21 – I will be modifying my new (to me) Roland electronic drum kit to work with my Xbox 360 and Rock Band 2.  This will be fun, and the parts are on their way to at my house.  Of course, I need to buy and learn how to use a soldering iron.  That’s a scary thought.
    • November 23 – Best Buy will exclusively release the highly anticipated Guns N’ Roses album Chinese Democracy, which is 15 years in the making.  I’ve seen that soon iTunes will also pick it up.  Hopefully, We will now have it in our store (see the ad to the right).

Really, it’s going to be a crazy month of new stuff.  Of course, the obsessions don’t end there.  We will be using, abusing, and reviewing everything once we get our hands on it all.

On the unofficial list, here are some other things coming up.

    • I will officially put the nail in the coffin “My Treo Obsession”.  This was the original title of this blog, and my whole reason for starting this thing up a couple years ago.  You can expect a big article in the next week or two, where I will officially retire both the Treo 650 and 700p, and hand them over to my children to destroy use as toys.

    • BlackBerry Storm & Bold Update

Posted on November 10th, 2008 Shawn No comments

I just got back from my weekly stop at the local mall to check on the Bold and Storm. So, here goes the update.

I’ll start with the Bold since it is now available. Before heading around the food court for 10 free samples of Orange Chicken, I stopped at the AT&T store. Five feet outside the store, I spied the Bold on the display wall….this time, it was a real Bold, not the dummy they had last week.

I spent some time playing (keep in mind, this is my first BB experience. I’m currently a Treo user). The screen resolution is nothing less than beautiful. I’ll get back to it in a minute, but honestly the most beautiful display I have ever seen on a smartphone.

The keyboard just feels good. In no time I was typing away like I had used this thing for years.  Keys feel good in the hands, not too big & not too small.  Only thing that I had a hard time with was realizing the ALT key for things like punctuation.  It’s a lot like the Treo, just took a minutes to figure it out.

Trackball and navigation is really good too.  The track ball flies and easy to use. I hear lot’s of people saying it gets all gummed up after lot’s of use (like a mouse ball).  I can see that, but new it flies.

The interface is “snappy” (as the kids say).  Seriously, from app-to-app, it just flies.  No lag, like I have always been used to on the Treo.  Very impressed.

On a similar note, I constantly tried to touch the screen to navigate, due to 4+ years of rocking a touchscreen Treo.  The on-screen buttons/icons on the Bold are so big, I immediately think it is a touch screen, but no.

Now on to media.  Played a song, and wow it was loud and clear.  The speakers on this thing rock!  I tried two demo videos on the device, and I am in awe.  The Speed Racer trailer is just incredible.  Crystal clear and stunning picture.  Though, to hop off the fanboy wagon for a sec, it stuttered at the end as it was transitioning back to the Media application.

To round it out, the device feels good in the hand.  The screen is wider but sorter than the Treo’s.  The leather back feels good.  I very much liked the device.  With Treo stylings, and WiFi it’s going to be hard not to pick one of these up.

Oh….you want to know how the phone works?  Dunno….I generally don’t care much about the phone on my smartphones…go figure.  I’ll post the specs after the break

Now, I head over to the Verizon store for the Storm update.  Same freakin’ update I got last week.  “Next month”.  I asked, “So are you saying December?”  And the guys says, “*sip from his iced coffee* Yup”.  WTF!?

    • BlackBerry News: Storm in December, Bold Dummy, and the Verizon Marketing Machine

Posted on November 5th, 2008 Shawn No comments

We reported yesterday that AT&T started emailing customers informing them of the official release of the BlackBerry Bold. Well, we have a hands-on update for you, after the break.

This morning at 9:30 AM, we recevied another teaser email from Verizon letting us virtually “touch” the Storm.  It’s basically a nice email linking to VerizonWireless.com/Storm.  We have some news from the trenches on this too, after the break.
      [ad#post-banner-ad]
At lunch yesterday, I headed over to my local mall and ventured to the AT&T store, oddly embedded within the food court.  Looked around, no Bold.  Asked the guy at the desk, says “Yup we got em.  Had a line of three people waiting for us to open today”.  So, I asked “Where’s the display unit?”  “Don’t have one yet, only a dummy.”

Actually, there are two AT&T stores in the mall and both only had dummy Bold’s.  But I got to feel it and pretended as if it was the real thing.  I didn’t take any photos with my Treo, since who cares about the dummy.  But, It did feel nice.  I liked the leather backing.  The keys are a nice size, screen size looks good too.

Though I decided not to spend too much time toying with a dummy (since it was only my lunch break), and headed across the hall to one-of-three Verizon stores in the mall.  “So”, I asked the guy behind the counter, “any word on the Storm release date?”

      ….

He says, “Probably a month.”   DOH!  No way we are going to have to wait till December to get our hands on this.  Really?  That’s all he had for me.  I considered heading to the other two Verizon stores to get confirmation, but figured I’d call it a day and try again another day.

    • AT&T Releases BlackBerry Bold

Posted on November 4th, 2008 Shawn No comments

At 6:28 AM this morning, I received an email from AT&T. It’s official, they have finally released the long awaited BlackBerry Bold. So, now you (assuming you live in the U.S.) can go get yourself the phone that the rest of the world has been enjoying for over 5 months now.

It really does looks like a great phone, with amazing specs. I’m honestly tempted to pick it up. But, with the very intriguing Storm on Verizon coming out in a week….I’ll wait.

      How’s about you?

    • The Storm is Closing in, and Things are Getting Bold

Posted on October 27th, 2008 Shawn No comments

Well, lookee here.  The internets are ablaze with BlackBerry release date announcements.  Before I drop some knowledge on ya, just a quick recap.

I’ve rocked a Treo 650 since 2004.  Then a Treo 700p until a couple months ago.  I had to go back to the the old 650 due to a headphone jack snafu on the 700p.

Looked at the iPhone and iPhone 3G, was just missing too much for me…primarily A2DP (Stereo Bluetooth).  Been eyeing lot’s of Windows Mobile devices, AT&T Tilt, Treo 800w, Treo Pro, and a couple others.  The new employer quickly narrowed my scope, by telling me it’s BlackBerry or no access to corporate email and resources.

So, BlackBerry is it.  I was about to pull the trigger on a Curve (which never excited much), then heard about the Bold.  The Bold changed everything for me.  I was going to leave Verizon for AT&T and be the first on my block with a Bold…and it being my first BB device, I was really looking forward to it.

Then delay, after delay, after delay (hint: I live in the U.S.)  Then enters the Storm (aka Thunder).  Other than a qwerty keyboard and WiFi the thing looks to be a gem.  So, fast forward to now.  Both Bold and Storm are upon us…and I’ve got to say, I am definitely going Storm.

Now, here are the release dates as we know them (thanks to many sources, including CrackBerry).

      AT&T BlackBerry Bold – available November 4th
Rogers BlackBerry Pearl 8220 – Ships Oct. 29, in stock for Halloween
Verizon BlackBerry Storm – Corporate Stores Nov. 15th, Best Buy, 16th, Everywhere 17th. As stated earlier on CrackBerry, stores should be opening an hour earlier on the opening week in anticipation
      Vodafone BlackBerry Storm – November 11th ?
Bell BlackBerry Storm – currently slated to launch Nov. 21

19 days to go for the Storm.  Can’t wait to retire the Palm (sad to see you go, to be honest), and rock the Storm.  How’s about you?  Any BB changes in the future for you?

    • BlackBerry Bold, on AT&T November 4

Posted on October 22nd, 2008 Shawn No comments

BoldWell, now you can FINALLY get your hands on a Bold (in the U.S.)  Since nearly every other land-based location in the world already has it, AT&T has finally given us a date of release.  November 4 it is.  Oh, and it’s $299 with a 2-year contract…holy crap, that’s expensive.

You may know that I was all for the Bold back in the Winter, Spring, and Summer…then it just took too long and I heard about the Storm coming for Verizon.  Now the Bold is old news for me, and I’m holding out for the Storm.  Good news is, the Storm is looking to ship on Verizon only 10 days after the Bold on AT&T.  Yep, the Storm is due November 14.
      [ad#post-banner-ad]
Looks like RIM will have a solid 3rd quarter this year.  Good thing since their stock (like everyone else’s) is currently in the crapper.

What say you?  Bold, Storm?  Something else?  Don’t care?
