I’m not an NBA gamer (or into basketball of any type), but I’m big Xbox Live fan and a giant 311 fan (from the way back machine). Check out the announcement from Xbox Live, plus Nick Hexum is promoting it on his Twitter feed.

    Play NBA 2K9 with 311

Alternative rock band 311 drops by Xbox LIVE to play Xbox LIVE® Gold Members in NBA 2K9 on August 31.

    The band 311.

If you’re an Xbox LIVE Gold Member (if not, upgrade now!), and you want a chance to play with 311, send a friend request to the following Gamertag and be online half an hour before (5:30 P.M. ET) the Game with Fame session starts on Monday, August 31, 6:00 P.M. ET.

The band 311, originally from Omaha, Nebraska, and now recording at a place called The Hive in California, have been around in various forms since 1988. But their latest album Uplifter, the fourteenth studio effort from this band that mixes the genres of rock and reggae, may be both their most intense and most successful release to date. That’s quite a thing to say, as their back catalog is impressive. They’ve scored in the top five position on the Billboard Magazine Modern Rock Tracks chart with six separate singles. The band 311 consists of Nick Hexum (vocals), Doug “SA” Martinez (vocals, turntable), Tim Mahoney (guitar), Aaron “P-Nut” Wills (bass), and Chad Sexton (percussion).
