  • ION Drum Rocker. Not so Real Life

Posted on August 25th, 2008 Shawn 7 comments

First, Thanks Pabel for starting the conversation about the ION Drum Rocker for Rock Band on Xbox 360. This will keep us busy.

I’ve started to review the photos over at Engadget, since those guys got their hands on a pre-release Drum Rocker. Hmmm….how does a schlep like myself get pre-release swag from the people in the biz? Honestly, I’d love it for free, but I’d pay for it too. Same thing with people getting pre-releases of Rock Band 2 and guitar Hero World Tour.  Just saying, think about the little guy over here on his blog.

Back to my reason for this post. I take some issue with the ION Drum Rocker, and have quickly realized some early disappointment. I do hope what I have seen in the photo below is not the final plan.

Look at the far left and far right sides. There are green, blue, orange, yellow, and red inputs for the drums/cymbals/pedals. At first sight, you might be excited about 8 inputs….I was. Then I thought about it.

Wait a second…. Let me put on my real drummer hat for a minute. A basic drum set has 4 drums (snare, hi-tom, low-tom, and floor tom; hi-hat cymbal plus hi-hat pedal; kick drum pedal; ride cymbal; and crash cymbal. That’s 9 inputs. The Drum Rocker has 8.

Hmmm. Ok, I have an even more concerning issue with this setup. ION has claimed that they are coming out for a second bass drum pedal for the heavy songs that use double-bass. Well, where’s the input for it? So, for me, a basic every day drum kit should have 10 inputs.

I can say that some drummers use only two toms, but still that’s 9.  And not every drummer plays double-bass.  So I can see 8, but there is only one official input for “pedal”.  So, I don’t know. I haven’t played it yet, but I think they may have missed something here. I do want to get my hands on this ASAP for a real hands-on test drive and review.

First impressions of the ION drum kit for RB2 are out.  Not sure how I feel about a $300 investment in these things given the comments.  Is this still something the hardcore drummer types are looking at?

  • Kinoma Play for Windows Mobile

Posted on August 25th, 2008 Shawn No comments

So, some of you may have heard the name Kinoma before….but I suspect only Palm OS folks.  Well, Kinoma Play is a new mobile app for Windows Mobile, which looks to be a solid iPod Touch/iPhone media player competitor.  Kinoma Play is for use with music, video, photos, online services, RSS feeds, internet radio, podcats, Flickr, and on and on.

I am a Kinoma user on Palm OS, and it’s a decent app for video.  I use it for online video, YouTube, Google Video on my Treo 700p all the time.  Though, this time around, it looks like the guys at Kinoma have really made a solid complete media player for Windows Mobile.  With really nice animation, background playing, this looks to be quite nice for $30.

Deiter Bohn of WMExperts does a good review.

I think it will easily replace the default Windows Media Player and going to make Pocket Tunes shake in it’s shoes.

Check it out for yourself at http://kinoma.com/play/

  • Treo 700p for Verizon 1.11 Update, not smooth

Posted on August 21st, 2008 Shawn No comments

Ok, so I ran the Treo 700p Updater for Verizon. You won’t be shocked to find out….I had problems. An hour is now gone, and I think hope that everything is ok. See my step-by-step details below. They are rough and quick, but just for you 700p users out there that might be updating. For everyone else, read the other posts….this is a boring one.

    700p Updater Steps

    1. Run backup or sync.
    2. Soft reset the phone (for me, used ChatterEmail to force a soft reset).
    3. Plugged in sync cable to laptop.
    4. Ran Desktop updater.
    5.
    6. On Treo selected “English”
    7. Used stylus to set screen
    8. Phone radio turned on automatically.
    9. Set time zone settings.
    10. Phone powered off automatically.
    11. Treo screen displayed “Updating Treo”.

    12. Desktop Updater started Copying Files

    13. Phone reset. Had to select language again.
    14. Had to do stylus tap again.
    15. Phone radio turned on automatically.
    16. Had to set time zone settings again.
    17. Phone automatically dialed my voice mail.
    18. I manually hung it up, then phone turned off.
    19. Treo screen displayed “Updating Treo”
    20. Desktop Updater continued with Executing Update
    21. My phone received a text message during the update. Why was the phone on???
    22. Phone automatically rebooted. Had to select language again.
    23. Had to do stylus tap again.
    24. Phone radio turned on automatically.
    25. Had to set time zone settings again.
    26. Desktop Installer displayed “Update Complete”. (This can’t be a good sign.)

    27. Phone Info screen on Treo displays correct updated version number “Treo700p-1.11-VZW”
    28. Ran *228, then 1 to program phone. “Unable to program phone” message. Directed to call support from a land line.
    29. Support asked me to remove battery. Done.
    30. Support running Verizon “soft reset” from their side.
    31. Support asked to replace battery. Done and powering on.
    32. Support asked me to type #*#000000#, then hit edit. Verified settings were accurate. Then hit save.
    33. Would not save due to no changes.
    34. Support checking on local tower issues.
    35. Tried *228, 2. It worked, phone is now provisioned, now have Verizon Wireless
    36. Tried *228, 1 again. Still getting “Unable to program phone” message.
    37. Support gave up, stating that since the phone is provisioned with option #2, it should be fine.

Oh Palm, curse you again! Why can’t anything be easy with your updates?

  • Rush Interview, Moving Pictures full album DLC Next Week

Posted on August 21st, 2008 Shawn No comments

Harmonix has posted Rush’s Moving Pictures is coming out as a full album next week.  All masters, no covers.  Kind of weird to me, since Tom Sawyer is already on Rock Band 2 (albeit a cover), and a cover of Limelight was already released.

For me as a drummer, I will likely pick up some, maybe the whole album next week….but I’m not overly excited for it.

Check out the interview with the Rush guys here.

  • Rock Band 2 – Multiple Players on one Gamertag

Posted on August 21st, 2008 Shawn No comments

I was just reading a preview of Rock Band 2 on IGN, and saw one item that I hadn’t heard before…and has me very excited for the upcoming release.

“Perhaps the best update to World Tour (aside from online play) is how easy it is to get a band together and play. No longer is there a leader of the band. In fact, no one has to be tied to a band. And on Xbox 360, you can have multiple members tied to the same Gamertag. Sign one person in and everyone can play. Characters aren’t tied to instruments either. This may explain why your band can’t be moved from RB1 to RB2. Oh, and I should mention that World Tour works with one player as well, so solo bass players of the world, rejoice!”

For those of you who played Rock Band (Xbox 360) online, you might know about this issue.  If you have two people in your house wanting to play RB online with other players, both of your players would need a Gamertag.  It makes playing online frustrating, and confusing to casual players (like myself).

Now, the good news is, if I have family or friends over my house, and we want to play an online World Tour with players across the globe, we will all be able to easily play together without having to jump though any hoops.

September 14 can’t come soon enough.

  • Treo Pro….Are You Ready?

Posted on August 20th, 2008 Shawn No comments

Are you ready for Palm to make a serious comeback (albeit with a Microsoft Windows Mobile OS)? So, are you ready? I am.

I have laid low on the rumor mill of this device, since I got bored posting rumors. Now, the Palm folks have come out [of the closet], and announced what we had heard as the Treo 850w. Palm is no longer calling their devices by numbers (i.e. the Centro).

Here are the Treo Pro’s Specs:

    • 400Mhz CPU , but snappy response
    • 256MB ROM, 128MB RAM! (Other reports show “In use: 43.96mb, Free 57.72mb”)
    • 320*320 screen
    • GPS
    • Full Tri-band 3G, Quad-band GSM
    • 2 Megapixel camera
    • microUSB connector!
    • 3.5mm Earphone connector
    • 1500mah battery (this is looking like it might actually be true?)

Now, I still need to figure out if work will let me put something other than a BlackBerry on the network.

  • Dave Matthews Band saxophonist dies

Posted on August 20th, 2008 Shawn 1 comment

I just learned the sad news from CNN.com that “LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of the Dave Matthews Band, died Tuesday from complications stemming from injuries he sustained in an ATV accident”. This is sad news for the music community, as LeRoi was a talented, respected, and friendly musician.

As a huge fan of the Dave Matthews Band, I’m very sad to hear the news of LeRoi’s passing. I’ve seen the band live 5 or 6 times over the years and love listening to their music.

This is the first I knew that he had been in an accident.  I’m sorry for his passing, and for the loss to his fans, family, and band members.  DMB now has a hole which we haven’t seen in its 17 (or so) year history.

    Here is the CNN article.

#41 live (one of my favorite DMB songs):

Say Goodbye live (arguably the best DMB song ever, with LeRoi playing beautifully on flute):

Here’s a quick video from the AP:
